DxO Labs has announced DxO PhotoLab 6 and ViewPoint 4. PhotoLab 6 is the company’s flagship raw file editing and workflow software while ViewPoint 4 is the latest version of its geometric and perspective correction software.

Chief amongst the updates made by DxO PhotoLab 6 is the introduction of DxO DeepPRIME XD, an AI-powered raw conversion and noise reduction technology, a new colour management system, new retouching tools and an upgraded image organisation system.

DxO DeepPRIME XD

DxO’s DeepPRIME technology does an excellent job of denoising images while and enhancing detail and the new DeepPRIME XD (eXtreme Details) mode is said to improve image quality even further.

DeepPRIME XD uses a neural network that has been developed through analysis of billions of images and it’s claimed to deliver more than 2.5EV improvement in high-ISO image quality. This means that an image shot at ISO 4000, for instance, can resemble an image captured at ISO 500 with regards to noise, colour and clarity. It can also boost dynamic range for greater flexibility in low-light.

PhotoLab 6 still has the original DeepPRIME mode as an option for faster processing or use with images that don’t need quite so much help, but DxO DeepPRIME XD delivers the best results with challenging images.

Colour processing

DxO has also re-engineered its colour processing algorithms for PhotoLab 6. DxO claims that this pushes the boundaries of colour management and extends the working colour space.

There’s also a Soft Proofing mode to maintain colour accuracy through the workflow and enable adjustments to be tailored to the images’ intended display method.

New retouching tools

DxO PhotoLab 6 also gains a new ReTouch tool that enhances its healing and cloning capability. It’s now possible to transform the source by mirroring, rotating, and scaling, or use brushes to fine-tune the area being edited.

The new tool is designed to reduce the amount of cloning and healing that needs to be done by other software. It also means that the work is carried out on the original raw file in a non-destructive manner.

Improved library system

Building on its PhotoLibrary system, DxO PhotoLab 6 extends its range of Exif and IPTC tags, adds nesting for Projects, and introduces colour labels for simpler file organisation without the need for catalogues.

Lens and camera profiles

DxO’s Optics Modules are central to DxO PhotoLab 6. These draw on DxO’s extensive analysis of lens and sensor performance to enable quick and easy automatic corrections that are adjustable.
