Platypod announces its new ‘eXtreme’ tripod plate with hinged spikes and more attachment points

Platypod has announced its latest compact tripod base, the Platypod eXtreme. This new version takes plenty if inspiration from its past models, but adds a few new unique features designed to improve usability and versatility.

The most notable upgrade is the addition of hinges spikes, which fold away when not in use and fold out when you need to secure the Platypod eXtreme to whatever terrain or platform you’re using it on. Previous versions included spikes, but they needed to be manually screwed into place every time you wanted to use them and they could only be positioned perpendicular to the plate. Now, the spikes are attached on all four corners using a rotating hinge.

The Platypod eXtreme also has more attachment locations than its predecessors with an array of carabiner cutouts in various shapes and sizes and various holes for securing into objects and other mounting solutions. Despite taking up roughly the same footprint of its predecessor, the Platypod Max, the eXtreme weighs 85g (3 ounces) less, even with the spikes attached.

The Playpod eXtreme is currently being funded on Kickstarter, as the company has done with all of its previous products (all of which have succeeded and shipped out to backers). For as pledge of $119, you can get the standard Platypod eXtreme setup, with the first units expected to ship out in August 2022. Head on over to the Kickstarter campaign to learn more and secure your pledge.
