We are constantly taught the value of originality as creatives and why it is important to explore, expand, and refine our creative voices. And so, it can sound a little strange to recommend you copy other photographers, but the exercise can actually be tremendous beneficial. This fantastic video tutorial discusses some of the reasons why you should try it.
Coming to you from Gary Gough, this insightful video tutorial will show you the importance of copying the work of other photographers. Of course, this exercise is not about passing off someone else’s work as your own for profit. Rather, it is a chance to get inside the mind of another photographer and understand both their creative approach and technical decisions that led to the process. It is one thing to study an image, but when you actually attempt to recreate it, you will often stumble on the same issues they did and better understand how they came to the final shot they did. And in copying that work, you will often filter the process through your own creative voice, which will, in turn, help you to expand your palette. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Gough.
